Day trips are a great way to get a taste of a new destination!
I had the best time visiting Burlington, Vermont last month for a gorgeous late summer Saturday. When I was younger I took a ferry from the New York side of Lake Champlain to the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory , but otherwise it was my first time visiting the city.
Here is my guide to getting the most of Burlington in 24 hrs!
After your 2hr+ drive in the am (assuming you are coming from the Capital Region of New York)
Head to Brunch
Fuel up for the day with some authentic and delicious Vermont maple syrup over Belgian buckwheat waffles or a yogurt parfait with honey and cranberries. Penny Cluse Cafe & The Farmhouse Tap & Grill are beloved brunch spots in downtown Burlington.
Bike Along Lake Champlain
Bring your own bikes or rent some at Local Motion to take in one of the most famous US lakes. The Island Line Trail is a 14 mile path that leads you to a causeway 3 miles into Lake Champlain. Take in the public beaches, adorable homes and scenic vistas along this enjoyable path.
Hang Out at The Beach
While you are biking/renting, stop at North Beach Park for some sandy beach time. There is a snack bar, bathrooms and grills to help keep you there for a few hours. There are a few other beach areas further along the bike path but I only stopped at this one!
Shop/Eat Along Church Street
There are so many shops and restaurants along the main drag of Church Street. It’s only about three blocks long so you can spend as little or as much time as you want here. I loved the promenade feel to Church Street, it was ideal if you are like me and love to do some people watching lol. Here are a few places we stopped at:
Church Street Tavern – Grab a beer and some spicy buffalo wings while you people watch on the promenade!
Cosmic Grind Coffee Shop- A cool coffee shop with some delicious espresso!
Check out a Vermont Brewery
Vermont is a hotspot when it comes to craft beer. There are breweries all over the state, some that are so popular their beers sellout everywhere when residents hear a shipment has come into their local gas station (looking at you Heady Topper). We stopped by Zero Gravity Craft Brewery on our way out and did not disappoint. I definitely plan on coming back one day for a brewery tour!!
There you have it, you can do a lot in 24 hours in Burlington! What are some of your favorite New England day trips?!
