I spend a week in Newport, RI every July with my whole maternal side of the family. After this most recent vacation I wanted to share our family favorite spots that we just HAVE to go to every year. Some of these places we talk about all year long!
If you are getting ready to visit Aquidneck Island, which Portsmouth, Middletown and Newport make up then you need to stop at one or all of these places!
Since I’m all about #dessertfirst here on Cupcake N Dreams, I thought I’d start off with the most famous milkshake in RI: The Awful Awful from Newport Creamery. My family and I talk about these year round and actually have contests when we are in town to see who can drink the most in a week. They range in ounces so sometimes we dare family members to get the big 32 ounce ones. In recent years they have introduced Outrageous Awful Awful’s that have more flavor such as Choc-o-nutter or Chocolate Mint Chip . They have a secret frozen milk mix that makes them taste so good, and if you happen to visit on a Monday it’s buy one get one! Newport Creamery is a kid friendly place (similar to Friendly’s, if you are from the Northeast) with a diner like menu for breakfast, lunch & dinner.
The Red Parrot is located on Thames Street (main town road) in Newport. It has three floors of seating plus 2 bars and it is always busy during the summer. It offers an extensive menu of seafood and other tropical twists on traditional pub fare. My family and I usually don’t mind the wait because we like to sit at the bar and have one of their fabulous pina coladas or some parrot punch! I also recommend the lobsta pizza or mediterranean swordfish, yet they do have an awesome chicken pasta if you aren’t into seafood. I love the atmosphere here and if you can find it in your stomach to make room for the no way jose dessert then it’s a must!
The Landing is another restaurant located on Thames Street in Bowen’s Wharf. It boasts one of the best waterfront dining experiences with an amazing view of the harbor on both levels and also has one of the best outdoor bars along the main street. They always have a band playing and usually don’t have to long of a wait for a table. I will start off with my love for their white sangria! It’s sooo good! I love their scallop dishes that come with tasty rice and vegetables as a side dish. My family also loves their clams casino and fish & chips as dinner favorites. Their portions are usually smaller than other restaurants so take note if that is something that isn’t a positive for you. I love their older boat decor with open windows and doors to their balconies, where you can also enjoy dinner. This place is worth the atmosphere and the sangria alone 🙂
The Pier Restaurant
The Pier Restaurant was a new one for me this year but an older fave of my family. It is located farther down the harbor but there are tons of cute shops on the walk there! I do rate restaurants in my head based on their food but I also pay attention to their drinks and this place was another great one if you love a cocktail at dinner. I enjoyed their clam chowder and summer salad while thoroughly enjoying my white sangria (it’s a thing for me haha). They definitely made one of the stronger sangrias I’ve had in awhile. They offer alfresco dining with a new outdoor bar where they have live music during the summer. You can also yacht watch while eating dinner or enjoying the bar, which is half the fun of being in Newport!
Flo’s Clam Shack
Hands down the best lobster roll on the island is at Flo’s Clam Shack. There are two locations: one by the cliff walks in Newport and a stand on the north part of the island in Portsmouth. If you are looking for more atmosphere I recommend the Newport location because it’s decorated like an old fishing boat. However the Portsmouth stand is right next to the bay so you can enjoy your lobster roll right next to the water. They also have the best clam cakes and stuffed quahogs and my family always eats here first after we arrive from New York each year.
Ok so those are my top five spots to eat right now in Newport/Portsmouth, but I thought I would add two bonus places that are located not far away in Bristol, RI. One is a pub, one quaint breakfast/lunch cafe.
Aidan’s Irish Pub
Adian’s Irish Pub offers an authentic Irish pub experience with a menu that ranges from hearty stews to beloved Irish sandwiches. They have a great outdoor deck for enjoying your meal outside while you watch the harbor in this historic American town. They also host a really fun trivia night on Tuesdays that my family may or may not get super competitive over each year 😉
The Beehive Cafe
Beehive Cafe is my number one spot for breakfast in the Newport area because they have some of the most delicious specials with gluten free and vegan options available. The kitchen nook decor gives off a very homey feel at the Beehive, with minimal seating upstairs and outdoors. I also love their coffee, especially the house blend with hints of chocolate, and buy a pound to enjoy at home each year. Check out these instagrams for mouth watering dishes!
