5 Reasons to Book a Contiki Tour

05/03/2017 16 Comments

The minute after I graduated from college, I embarked on one of my favorite travel adventures ever! I took a tour of Europe with the group travel company, Contiki Tours. A friend recommend the tour to me after she took it the previous summer. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. Before this trip, I had only been to London, so I was excited to customize my tour and experience more of Europe. Here are 5 reasons why you should consider booking a Contiki Tour:

I couldn’t take a normal picture back then lol

Contiki did not contact me to write this post. All opinions are based on my own experience.

Customize Your Tour

Countries, cIves, length, time of year, there is a trip for every 18-35 year old. Contiki’s website shows you available tours based on region and length of stay. Browse through over 300+ tours that start year round.

Don’t Worry About The Next Stop

It’s all setup for you! Your accommodations, transportation, tours, and dinners are already sorted out ahead of time. All you have to do is keep an open mind and enjoy the ride. I thoroughly enjoyed having a trip manager and bus driver who were in charge of getting us from place to place and knew what they were doing. They always had great recommendations for our free days too.

The best tour manager!

Did I mention you still get free time on these tours to go out and explore yourself?! That’s right, our tour guide would give us a map of the most popular sights to see in each spot, but we were still free to go where we wanted. I enjoyed having the freedom and the suggestions, it took the stress off a planner like me. I still felt like I saw everything I wanted to see at each stop.

Decided to go tubing while in Nice, France

Unique Spots and Excursions

The biggest surprise for me was how much I enjoyed each extra excursion I paid for and the unique spots we stayed in while traveling with contiki. The best one had to be the French Chateau in Bordeaux, whis is a special contiki stop over. There are many places like this on various contiki tours.

Most of the excursions I experienced on the London to Athens tour were worth my money. I always felt like I was getting a taste of each culture. I wouldn’t have found many of them as easily on my own. Plus, some prices are lower than what you would pay individually because contiki receives group discounts.

Different Styles of Travel

Since, I was a fresh college grad with only the money I saved to take this trip, I opted for the budget style. Contiki offers camping, budget, and luxury style tours. So if you are someone looking to have a backpacking experience or hotels all the way through, contiki is the one for you. The budget level was awesome because I experienced a little bit of both.

It’s kind of comical now to think my first time staying in Paris was in a cabin outside of the main city lol. There’s also family dinners dining hall-style throughout the budget level too. I thought it all was part of the experience and an affordable way to see a lot of Europe all at once.

Expanding Your Network Around The World

I think one of the best parts about Contiki is that it attracts young people from all around the world. I enjoyed getting to know all my tour mates, who were from various countries around the world, mainly Australia though (Hi Aussie friends!). Don’t be afraid to book a tour even if you are solo traveler. Everyone is friendly and adventure like-minded.  You’ll bond over long bus rides, family style dinners, crazy nights out and sharing rooms across Europe. Plus your tour song! (I think of my contiki tour every time I hear #DontStopMeNow)

Most of the crew in Florence 🙂

You are like a family with these people for how ever long your tour lasts. You will cherish the memories you make for years to come. Due to social media, it’s easier than ever to stay connected with your new friends. You never know when these connections can lead to love, jobs or friends to travel with to more places.

Have you ever taken a contiki tour?! What was your experience??

I feel like that is the best thing to do when you’re fresh out of school!! When I was studying abroad we stayed in a similar place like you stayed in outside of paris – but it was in venice!! Such a fun time!

Ah I wondered if we stayed in the same place! I stayed in a cabin setting outside Venice too across the water 🙂 lol I’ll never forget those places.

London to Athens by bus? You have to be young to sign up for that! What a great trip though – likeminded people, a new city every couple of days, someone to organise everything. Made me wish I was 21 again! #WanderfulWednesday

I’ve never ever heard of Contiki tours! I really surprised! Looks like a ton of fun though and what a fun way to solo travel! You meet so many people and are never alone! Also I love that they have different budget levels to choose from and that they plan everything even when you have free days. I’m an obsessive planner, so it would be nice to have the stress taken off of me for once! Looks like a blast 😀

Yes! That’s why I wanted to spread the word, it’s a great option for travel. Having the stress taken off me to plan was so worth it. Thanks for hosting 🙂

Honestly, my initial reaction was: I hate group tours! But it’s good to hear that you get plenty of free time to go exploring yourself if you want to!

It was an added bonus for sure! I think it helped with the stigma of group tours.

I’ve never taken a tour as I don’t like planning anything and go with the flow instead. But I guess this way you don’t have to plan anything either 😉 And it sounds so fun that you got to meet so many people.

I’ve never heard of Contiki Tours, but it sounds like a load of fun! And interesting they have different types of tours! Even though I’m married, it could be fun to see if they have a couples group or if we could just join a big group. Would be a nice way of meeting other similar travelers! Will have to look into this! #WanderfulWednesday

Definitely Lolo! There were a few married couples on my tour and they hung out with everyone on the tour most of the time. On free days they would venture off themselves which was fine, most people paired off anyways. I think it’s a great way to meet people and do your own thing!
