Top Weekend Getaways in the Northeast during Fall

As a native of the northeast I have been spoiled to be able to witness many beautiful fall seasons in my lifetime. September and October are amazing months to plan a weekend getaway to many northern states including Canada.

Lake George, NY

The Sagamore

Lake George, NY may boast some of the most beautiful views during fall when the leaves start to change and reflect colorfully off the lake, the drive up is half the beauty. Prices drop in the fall and there are less crowds at the restaurants and resorts like the Sagamore. Check out my post here about reasons to stay at The Sagamore during your weekend getaway. The fall is a perfect time to get those hikes in and there are a couple of moderate ones surrounding the LG area. Check out great hikes in the Lake George region if you want to take your workout outdoors during your getaway. You could even still get some boating in to take in the beauty from the lake, boat rentals are a great way to go or hop on the Lac Du Saint SacramentHere are some restaurants to take a look at during your visit.

Montreal, QC, CAN

If you have a passport then take a trip to Montreal, Quebec, Canada during September to take advantage of the gorgeous weather and less crowds. This English-French city offers a taste of Europe without the airfare and time change. They have great cuisine, art galleries, beautiful parks and festivals to check out during your stay. The fall colors reach up there as well. Book a cool studio or condo through Airbnb for your stay to get a taste of Montreal living while being walking distance to some of it’s main attractions.

Stowe, VT

This destination is a Pinterest favorite for the fall. What better place to take in the fall colors than in Vermont, home to maple syrup and Ben & Jerry’s (now that’s what I’m talking about #DessertFirst). Stowe offers great festivals during the fall like their annual Fall Foliage Arts Festival, Pumpkin Chuckin’ Festival and their own version of Oktoberfest. If you want to stay active during your trip they offer biking, mountain climbing and hiking trails with guided options. I still recommend checking out Airbnb, but Stowe does offer reasonably priced hotels and resorts as well.

Finger Lakes Region, NY

Bring on the wine! If you are looking for a more romantic getaway with some wine and lake views mixed in with your fall colors then look no further than New York’s own bustling wine region, the Finger Lakes. Take  a tour of one of their 120 wineries in the area and stay in one of their chic new B&B’s or a renovated farmhouse. Hike along the beautiful waterfalls in Watkins Glen State Park or check out the Rockwell Museum.

Newport, RI

Fall is always a great time to visit Newport, RI because the beach is still gorgeous and a little less crowded and the Newport Wine and Food Festival is one of the best events in the northeast. Come taste some of the best cuisine by world renowned Chefs and some of the best wine this region has to offer. If a food and wine festival isn’t your thing, take advantage of the summer crowd going back to their regular schedules and hang out at the beach or waterfront restaurants. Hotel prices and B&B’s are lower this time of year as well.

I don’t know about you but I’m ready to book a fall adventure in the northeast!!
